Duties: The Public Health Department is responsible for the health of citizens of Jefferson County.

Location: 200 W. Briggs, Fairfield, M-F 8:00-4:30

Board of Health public meetings are held the third Thursday of January, April, July, and October.

Sanitarian Duties:

Provide enforcement of and information about the County Ordinance regarding septic systems:
RULES GOVERNING THE CONSTRUCTION, USE, OPERATION, AND MAINTENANCE OF DISPOSAL SYSTEMS WITHIN ANY AREA OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, IOWA

Specify, permit and inspect all new septic systems.

Provide septic inspections at Time of Transfer -
(all applicable transfer of property must have a septic system inspection by the County Sanitarian):

   NOTE: The new owner must apply for a new Discharge Authorization Permit - see NPDES General Permit #4 - Discharge from Onsite Wastewater Treatment and Disposal Systems on the DNR website.

Provide information about septic system use and maintenance:

Consult on RUSS (Regional Utility Service Systems) program.

Approve permits for new wells, and well and cistern plugging.

Coordinate Radon Mitigation Workshops for Contractors - call for information.

Inspect tanning salons and provide owner/management testing. For information, see the Iowa Department of Public Health website - www.idph.state.ia.us/eh/tanning_facilities.asp.

Teach Qualified Sampler Course. The course will qualify home owners to take BOD and TSS samples from their septic system's sand filter discharge pipe.
